Increasing Deadline-Constrained Throughput in Multi-Channel ALOHA Networks via Non-Stationary Multiple-Power-Level Transmission Policies

چکیده
Multi-channel Slotted ALOHA is currently used primarily in satellite-based networks for transaction processing (e.g., credit card payments at cash registers). For these applications, maximization of attainable throughput while adhering to a maximum-delay constraint with a required probability reflects both the user’s requirements, the network owner’s desires, and the non-deterministic nature of ALOHA. This paper explores the judicious use of multiple power levels as a priority mechanism; e.g., the last transmission attempt uses higher power. It focuses on the practical and relevant range of three transmission attempts, up to three power levels, and maximum values of the permissible probability of missing the deadline (Pe) in the range 10−5 < Pe < 10−2. Our scheme increases the attainable delay-constrained throughput by 84–355% (two power levels) and 140–762% (three levels) over classical slotted ALOHA. An optimized combination of multiple copies and two power levels outperforms classical slotted ALOHA by 144–1240%. The smaller Pe, the greater the improvement. The benefit of our schemes is thus dramatic, and far exceeds the contribution of power capture to (unconstrained) capacity of ALOHA.

Throughput Maximization for Multi-Slot Data Transmission via Two-Hop DF SWIPT-Based UAV System
In this paper, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted cooperative communication system is studied, wherein a source transmits information to the destination through an energy harvesting decode-and-forward UAV. It is assumed that the UAV can freely move in between the source-destination pair to set up line of sight communications with the both nodes. Since the battery of the UAV may be limite...
متن کاملA Game Theoretic Optimization of the Multi-channel ALOHA Protocol
In this paper we consider the problem of distributed throughput maximization of networks with multi-channel ALOHA medium access protocol. In the multi-channel ALOHA protocol, each user tries to randomly access a channel using a probability vector defining the access probability to the various channels. First, we characterize the Nash Equilibrium Points (NEPs) of the network when users solve the...
متن کاملAsymptotic Close to Optimal Resource Allocation in Centralized Multi-band Wireless Networks
This paper concerns sub-channel allocation in multi-user wireless networks with a view to increasing the network throughput. It is assumed there are some sub-channels to be equally divided among active links, such that the total sum rate increases, where it is assumed each link is subject to a maximum transmit power constraint. This problem is found to be a non-convex optimization problem and i...
متن کاملThroughput Optimal Decentralized Scheduling of Multi-Hop Networks with End-to-End Deadline Constraints: Unreliable Links
We consider multi-hop networks serving multiple flows in which packets not delivered to their destination nodes by their deadlines are dropped from the network. The throughput of packets that are delivered within their end-toend deadlines is called the timely-throughput. We address the design of policies for routing and scheduling packets that optimize any specified weighted average of the time...
متن کاملThroughput Optimization in Multi-hop Wireless Networks with Random Access
This research investigates cross-layer design in multi-hop wireless networks with random access. Due to the complexity of the problem, we study cross-layer design with a simple slotted ALOHA medium access control (MAC) protocol without considering any network dynamics. Firstly, we study the optimal joint configuration of routing and MAC parameters in slotted ALOHA based wireless networks under ...
